The Alchemy of Dyeing x MĒRU line is a capsule concept where our signature designs undergo the process of being dyed alchemically.
The Alchemy of Dyeing is an immersive research and workshop platform that explores chromatics, urban foraging and complexities around organic dyeing. First launched in 2020, this initiative is a collaboration between our creative director, Mehru Khan and renowned artist and educator, Nahla Tabbaa.
Inspired by the insights of The Alchemy of Dyeing collective, our head designer Mehru dyes each piece herself – continuing her research by exploring and repurposing foraged and found objects into extraordinary elements and pigments.
MĒRU’s commitment to sustainability is affirmed by making this process 100% natural with silk, wool, cotton, bamboo and jute as textiles, where techniques such as bundle dyeing, eco-printing and shibori, meet elements like oxygen, the sun, the moon, water, and metals.
The choice relies on the materials and base fabric used for the process; the merging of techniques, textiles and elements delivers a unique piece, as the final outcome of colours and patterns is unpredictable in nature.
As you choose your MĒRU signature style, our designer can be commissioned to curate a bundle for you, where organic elements of your preference, such as those in a flower bouquet, food scraps, culinary spices, and rusted objects are used in the dyeing process.
COLLABORATIONS
The Alchemy of Dyeing x MĒRU line has enabled other collaborations in the arts, such as A Lifesaver on Fire displayed at Tashkeel Studio and Gallery as part of the exhibition “The Philosophy of Food”.
This mixed media installation of photographic print and natural dyed saree textile was developed alongside photographer Andrea Salerno Jacome.
